Welcome to Oak Class

The curriculum in Oak Class is guided by the EYFS Development Matters, EQUALS scheme of work: My Play and Leisure and SEE-KS (Social, Emotional, Engagement – Knowledge and Skills).

It is delivered through a semi-formal timetable with a higher emphasis on developing key skills and knowledge. There is a mixture of engaging adult-led activities and structured curriculum focused play, which is supported by adults to extend learning.

Pupils in Oak class who have been assessed as ready for subject specific learning will be taught 1-1 or in small groups:

  • Reading: Following Hawthorns Guided Reading Framework
  • Phonics: Following Letters and Sounds Framework
  • Maths: Following White Rose Scheme of Work

They will also develop knowledge and skills using a thematic cross curricular approach to learning in

  • Science: Following EQUALS SOW
  • Foundation subjects: Following the EYFS framework and Hawthorns skills progressions

In Oak we cover a wide range of exiting topics to expand our understanding of the world around us, these are often linked to the children’s interests.  Each topic will last a full half term.

Parent App

Hawthorns school now has a parent app (PA Connect) The app is now the school’s main way of communication.  This reduces the amount of paper we use as an Eco School.  All letters, newsletters and important message will be sent directly to your phone or tablet via the app.  Parents and carers can also update changes in emergency contact numbers that we have on our systems for your child.  For more information about what else the parent app and a step-by-step guide on how to install the app click here
