Harvest Festival Food Donations - October 2024
In October, staff and children sent in food donations into school for our Harvest Festival. On Thursday 24th October, children from our First Steps, Aspire and Enrichment pathways came together in an assembly to learn about why we have a Harvest festival. During the assembly each class brought their class Harvest box they had created. The food donations this year were given to Tameside South and Longendale Food Bank.
Holocaust Memorial Day 2024
FREEDOM in all its forms was at the heart of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration in Tameside – its fragility, what it means to us, how much we value it, and what it might be like to lose it.
The project comprised two parts: Thomas Ashton School, Hyde, pupils created a large sculpture of two shackled hands, holding and surrounded by hundreds of zines (leaflets), filled with art, collage and reflections about the things the students enjoy most and which they can access because they are free.
The second part was completed by groups of children from other SEND schools across Tameside including Hawthorns who worked with performer Adam Blake to compile a series of short stories based around themes of their characters being free, wishing to be free, and losing or gaining freedom, expressing them through live performance and storytelling.
These key themes have been woven together through the traditions of fairytales, folklore and nursery rhymes.
The completed installation was unveiled at Thomas Ashton School on Friday 26th January.
Tameside Toy Appeal - December 2023
In November, Hawthorns school became a Tameside Toy appeal drop-off location for the Audenshaw area. The idea to support the Toy appeal came from our School/ Eco council meeting held in October. On Monday 13th December, representatives from Tameside Toy appeal and Tameside Radio came to collect the donations and also interview children from our School and Eco councils.
