Intent

Learning Maths will encourage our pupils to explore, investigate and understand the world around them. Learning will be carefully differentiated based on the Curriculum Pathway, and developmental level of the pupils. Initially, learning will be of a more sensory nature, gradually becoming more concrete through activities such as TEACCH boxes, before a more structured but fun approach is established.

Our aim is to develop learners with a sound understanding of maths and an ability to anticipate, predict and solve real life problems, providing them with skills that enable them to be more independent into adulthood. Particular focuses are on Number, Money, Time, Shape, Measure and Statistics with opportunities provided for learning in real life situations.

Implementation

Curriculum

Emphasis is given to using imaginative and motivating resources and activities, including the use of multi-sensory approaches, to reflect the different learning abilities and learning styles of pupils. A bespoke Hawthorns Calculation Policy will be developed and reviewed, ensuring a consistent but flexible approach, to the teaching of Maths across all Pathways.

Depending on the Pathway, and/or needs of the pupil(s), teaching can be with 1:1 support, as part of a small group, or whole class group as appropriate.

Maths objectives are incorporated into the First Steps (EYFS), used by our First Steps Pathways. A more detailed Maths Programme of Study, with progression based on White Rose Maths, is followed by the Aspire Pathway, and also classes within the Connections and Enrichment Pathways, where it is appropriate for learners to do so. Other classes and learners will work towards small steps learning goals set out in the pupil’s Personal Learning Plan (PLP), which is based on the priorities set out within the Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Learners will be encouraged to develop their Metacognitive skills, alongside developing their Maths skills, using strategies based on Talk for Writing in Maths.

A yearly Maths Week will be held to celebrate Maths and promote an enjoyment of Maths.

Assessment

Formative assessment will form part of the weekly lesson cycle within every class. Formal assessment, when data is collected and progress measured, will be recorded through Evidence for Learning. Progress in Number will be tracked at the end of the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms. Progress in Shape, Measure, Money, Time and Statistics will be tracked on a yearly basis. A child’s progress will be based on their overall learning journey and evidenced through a mixture of photographs, videos, observations and teacher judgements.

The Role of the Maths Lead

  • Subject development • Learning audit • Data analysis • Moderation and evidence gathering • Learning Walks • Resources (purchase/audits) • Policy updates • Support of Continued Professional Development.

Impact

At Hawthorns, learners will achieve a developmentally appropriate:

o             Enthusiasm for maths.

o             Resilience and a reduction in maths anxiety.

o             Understanding of mathematical language.

o             Understanding of mathematical concepts in the areas of Number, Shape, Measure, Money, Time and Statistics.

o             Understanding of how maths impacts all areas of their daily lives.

o             Metacognitive strategies to be more independent learners and demonstrate their maths skills effectively.

o             Confidence in applying their skills to real life situations.

Where appropriate, learners will access National Curriculum tests and teacher assessments at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and Key Stage 2 (Year 6).
