Welcome to Hazel Class

We are an Early Years class within the First Steps Pathway at Hawthorns.  Hazel class follow the First Steps Curriculum based within the EYFS Framework.  The primary focus in Hazel is the development of children’s social communication, attention skills and engagement in learning. Using elements adapted from the SEE-KS model (Social, Emotional, Engagement – Knowledge and Skills), children are taught to regulate their emotions and develop their social communications and joint attention.
The curriculum is delivered through a structured timetable where transactional supports are utilised to assist the development of children’s understanding, communication strategies, management of sensory needs and regulation of emotions.  These include a structured timetable, predicable routines, visual supports and aids, communication strategies and a sensory sensitive environment.
The aspirational goal for pupils in Hazel class is to develop communication, independence and engagement to allow them to actively participate in social activities and play.  Once pupils have developed a functional means of communication, they will have greater independence and access to increased opportunities for play and learning as they progress through the First Steps Pathway.

The Adults in Hazel Class are:

 Name  Position
 Mrs E. Platt  Class Teacher
 Miss S. Archer  Teaching Assistant
 Miss T. Hatton  Teaching Assistant

As well as developing our social communication, attention skills and engagement in learning we also develop our early curriculum skills in line with the EYFS framework.  To achieve this we cover a wide range of exiting topics to expand our understanding of the world around us, these are often linked to children’s interests.  All sessions are hands on and engaging to ensure pupils develop a love for learning.  Each session is differentiated to the individual child to ensure learning is meaning and purposeful to all.

Parent App

Hawthorns school now has a parent app (PA Connect) The app is now the school’s main way of communication.  This reduces the amount of paper we use as an Eco School.  All letters, newsletters and important message will be sent directly to your phone or tablet via the app.  Parents and carers can also update changes in emergency contact numbers that we have on our systems for your child.  For more information about what else the parent app and a step-by-step guide on how to install the app click here
