Welcome to Fern Class

We are a key stage 2, Communications Pathway class at Hawthorns Wildbank Provision.

Fern class is a specialised communication class, which offers a personalised approach to meet the needs of our learners. The core aims of our curriculum are to develop skills in: social communication, emotional regulation and play. We learn through interactive, exciting sessions such as attention autism sessions, communication sessions and early learning sessions! The children in Fern class follow a personalised timetable tailored to their level of need to support them access the learning and remain regulated and happy throughout the day! Fern class follows the SCERTS framework, meaning we support our learners to develop their Social Communication through interacting and requesting from staff in sessions and during play. We also focus on increasing the pupil’s ability to emotionally regulate throughout the day. We have sensory equipment available throughout the day to support our pupils to remain regulated as well as the use of a sensory room at Wild Bank! We support our children to use transactional supports by having them readily available in the environment to request toys, and during snack time and communication sessions to request preferred foods and resources.

The Adults in Fern Class are:

 Name  Position
 Miss N. Browne  Class Teacher
 Miss C. Davies  Teaching Assistant
Miss A. O’ Carroll  Teaching Assistant
 Mr L. Dawson  Teaching Assistant

Attention Autism

In Fern Class we have 2 attention sessions per week. These sessions are designed to increase attention and focus whilst having lots of fun!

Stage 1- The bucket

Staff will sing a song and create awe and wonder around ‘what could be in my bucket?’ The staff member pulls out three items separately and explores them modelling key language. For example, they might say ‘bubbles! Pop pop pop!’

Stage 2- Attention builder

This stage is where we complete a large design or create a scene which grabs the attention of our audience! We like to lay down a shower curtain before hand as this can get quite messy!

Stage 3- Turn taking and re-engaging attention

This stage we all take a turn! Children switch their attention to their peers and back to the lead adult as we all take a turn doing some really fun such as splatting a bun!

Stage 4- Shifting and re-engaging attention

We move to the table and complete a short task which involves imitating what our lead adult has produced!
