ECO

Hawthorns is proud to be an Eco Schools Green Flag school.  In February 2021, we had the Green Flag renewed for the sixth time.  The evidence that has to be submitted is taken from the topics given by Eco Schools, these are then applied to any relevant class topics and eco/environmental/nature celebration events.  Over the last two years, Hawthorns pupils and staff have taken part in many of these events, some of the latest being “What’s Under Your Feet Month?” National Children’s Gardening Week, British Garden Wildlife Week, Outdoor Classroom Day, World Panda Day and World Giraffe Day.  To mark World Ocean Day, we welcomed Janet from Kingfisher Education back to Hawthorns to deliver her fantastic workshop all about water, how we use it and how we can conserve it.
All these events present fantastic opportunities for the children to learn so much about the amazing amount of biodiversity within not only their local environment, but also nationally and internationally.
Hawthorns Eco Team continues to strive to keep up eco awareness throughout the school and are continuing to collect crisp packets/pens for recycling.  All fruit waste is collected weekly by Chestnut Class and put into the wormery and composter.
The UN Good Life Goals have been introduced and over the next academic year, I will continue to build them into all our eco incentives.
I currently have the pleasure of ordering badges and certificates for the children who have taken part in The Junior Forester and the National Outdoor Learning awards.  The children have worked extremely hard since September and thoroughly deserve to be recognised for their achievements.
